Are vegans holier than thou?

December  1, 2023

Hey troops!

I bet when you’re doing vegan outreach you get accused of thinking you’re better than people that eat meat. I don’t think we are. Vegans are just pointing out avoidable evil activities that carnist Christians take part in. Sadly, the carnist you are speaking to really can’t understand that. They're so self-absorbed in their carnism that pointing it out makes you look preachy and holier-than-thou.

Thing is, some folks are so wrapped up in their meaty ways that they can't see the bummer side of it. It ends up making us vegans look preachy and holier-than-thou. But when it comes to chatting with a Christian, that’s where things groove up in our vegan favor.

Why’s that? Well, when someone gets into Christianity, they sign up for a moral guide, straight from the Big Guy above. It’s not about humans setting these standards; they’re God’s idea. And surprise, surprise, those standards lean toward the veg life.

It runs like this. In Galatians 5, the apostle Paul lays out the good stuff in a Christ-centered life: love, joy, peace, and all that groovy jazz. But hey, this ain’t about being superior to other Christians. It’s like a starter pack, a baseline. Folks who aren’t into the faith should spot these good vibes from any Christian.

Now, love, peace, and being gentle—those don’t mix with animal harm, right? So every Christian agrees, that’s a no-go. Choosing to avoid that harm is the basic moral ground, and slipping below that is, well, not cool.

Think of it like this: A dad should take care of his kid’s needs, yeah? But just doing the basics, like feeding and clothing, doesn’t make him a hero dad. It’s more like regular dad stuff. But if he doesn’t step up to at least fulfill regular dad stuff, he drops into that deadbeat dad zone, morally falling beneath the regular dad bar.

Same with us vegans. We ain’t showing off by not hurting animals; it’s about doing what’s decent, you know? I’m not thinking I’m better because I’m not into animal harm. I’m just flowing with what feels right, especially since I’m rolling with God’s plan.

So, are we vegans holier than meat-eaters? Nah. Choosing kindness doesn’t put us on a pedestal. We’re just living up to basic Christian standards. It’s not about being better; it’s about being in sync with what feels right.

Peace, love and all things groovy,

Steve

Galatians chapter 5 : 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
